Here is important information regarding entry requirements for traveling from the United States to or transiting through the United Kingdom:
1. Passport
Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in the UK.
2. Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)
Starting January 8, 2025, U.S. citizens will need an ETA to enter the UK for purposes such as tourism, family visits, business meetings, conferences, or short-term study for six months or less. Applications for an ETA opened on November 27, 2024.
Applying for an ETA is quick and simple. Visitors should apply in advance and can find more information on when and how to apply at GOV.UK .https://www.gov.uk/guidance/apply-for-an-electronic-travel-authorisation-eta
An ETA costs £10 and allows for multiple journeys to the UK for stays of up to six months at a time over two years or until the holder’s passport expires, whichever is sooner.
The introduction of ETAs aligns with the border security approaches of many other countries, including the US and Australia, and helps prevent the arrival of individuals who may present a threat to the UK.
3. Visa
Depending on your nationality, the reason for your visit, and the length of your stay, you may also need a visa to enter or travel through the UK.
4. Other Requirements
While visiting the UK, you must be able to:
- Show proof that you will leave the UK at the end of your visit.
- Demonstrate that you can support yourself and your dependents during your trip.(You must have enough money to cover your trip's costs, including your return or onward travel, and any activities you plan to do. You can't work or use public funds to support yourself.)
- Ensure that you do not stay in the UK for extended periods through frequent or successive visits or make the UK your primary residence.
